The eminent astrophysicist, Professor Lindstrom, has proof that aliens have landed on Earth and are planning on taking it over. He also believes the aliens are plotting to kill him. The trouble is, neither his doctor nor his son take him seriously, not even after the plane he was supposed to be in blows up in mid-air. One man believes him: David Vincent. David meets with the professor, but only after a phony preacher and a fake chauffeur fail to prevent the meeting. Meanwhile, the son suffers from debilitating headaches that have no normal cause. Two con men trick David Vincent into believing they had seen something strange in the desert. They lure him into the wilderness, knock him unconscious, steal his money and leave him to die. But out in the desert, David sees a real spaceship. He manages to return to town, where he learns from a newspaperman of someone else who had seen something strange. David Vincent meets with Warren Doneghan, the president of Jet Age Electronics, who believes aliens have kidnapped various heads of their fields, and are planning to kidnap him as well. Tom Wiley, Doneghan's best friend, and the head of security at Jet Age, is highly skeptical. Vincent and Doneghan hatch a scheme to allow the aliens to kidnap the latter in order to learn the truth about what these unwelcome beings are doing. Sgt. Corman, a motorcycle cop, stops a couple of young men in a station wagon with a headlight out. When he hears a strange noise, he asks to look inside their car; what he sees drives him mad. Later, David Vincent asks to speak with him at the hospital. Corman's physician, Dr. Grayson, wants David to stay away from his patient. Corman's boss, Lt. Greg Lucather, who blames himself for what happened, agrees with the doctor when he learns of David's reputation as a kook. Corman's wife, however, agrees to let David see her husband. After a telephone lineman reports seeing something strange at a manufacturing plant, David Vincent, using an assumed name, gets a job with the plant's owner, George Vikor. Vikor hires David as chauffeur for his wife, who has been arrested twice for drunk driving. Soon, David manages to sneak into the company's security building, where he finds proof of alien activity. A schoolteacher with a nervous disposition visits one of her students in his barn and sees something she shouldn't: a metallic box that seems to be controlling locusts. No one takes her story seriously, and even she believes she imagined the whole thing. But her story hits the newspapers, which brings David Vincent to her small Kansas town to investigate. At an army base in Utah, Major Rick Graves worries about an upcoming nuclear test. Graves's friend, Charles Spence, believes that a three-month-old crater, supposedly caused by a meteor, was in reality created by an alien spaceship. He also believes that Carl Wyeth, an engineer on the base, has met with the aliens. Spence has Graves call in David Vincent to investigate. Meanwhile, Graves voices his fears to his superior, General Beaumont. But Beaumont is colluding with the aliens, who have plans to explode an anti-matter bomb that will kill millions of people. A private plane crashes, but the investigators can't find a record of the flight, nor can they find a body - even though it was a crash no one could have walked away from. What they do find is a cylinder made of some strange metal they can't identify. They have it sent to Sperrick Laboratories. It arrives, but not without incident. Someone tried to hijack the mail truck, and two security guards were killed. David Vincent arrives at Sperrick to investigate. He is certain that the aliens were behind the attempted hijacking and that what they wanted was that strange cylinder. He is also certain that they will try again. Vincent finds allies in a security guard and a woman scientist. But as always, he never knows which of his friends are real and which are enemies in disguise. Written by J. Spurlin

In the file room of a U.S. government base, an air force captain is forced to shoot and kill an airman who pulls a gun on him. The airman glows and disintegrates. Meanwhile, David Vincent is in Maine, trying to find a fisherman who is in possession of an alien disk. After his bizarre experience, Captain Mitchell Ross wants David to testify with him before a committee. But David knows that talk will do no good: he needs that alien disk. Later, the aliens abduct David and take him on a trip into their space ship. Incredibly, they want to convince him that they have only peaceful intentions. A pilot for chartered planes learns too much about the aliens when he sees one of them get injured on a flight. The man's arm is torn up, but he doesn't bleed. The passengers abduct the pilot and take him to Midlands Academy in New Mexico, a school that is really a front for an alien indoctrination center. The alien running the academy decides to let the pilot live - if he'll go on smuggling in foreigners to the academy. The money they offer him is a great temptation, especially since he has a wife half his age who is bored with him. Meanwhile, David Vincent learns of this academy, and uncovers the truth about it. David Vincent gets a job for Carver Oil in Houston as a designer; but his reason for taking the job is to find proof of alien activity. After many nights of vigil in the Carver railroad yard, he finally sees a spaceship land and discovers that an old rusted oil tanker contains alien machinery. He steals a computer tape from the tanker, and then goes immediately to Simon Carver's mansion in order to bring the old oil tycoon to the field. Unfortunately, the aliens have gotten rid of all evidence before he gets there. But David still has that computer tape. He enlists Neal Taft, a disgraced cryptographer, to find out what's on it. Meanwhile, Carver's daughter, Susan, finds herself torn between preventing a scandal for her father and betraying David, the man she loves. Written by J. Spurlin
