Jessica and Sheriff Amos Tupper go to a Portland Sheriff's convention by bus. After picking up two unknown passengers, the stormy weather and damage force the party to take an indefinite rest at a diner. When she goes back to the bus to look for a book, she finds Gilbert Stoner, one of the extra passengers, a just released ex-convict dead, stabbed with a screw-driver. While everybody is stuck at least till the local police arrives, Amos with help from Jessica conduct an informal investigation. Seeing Stoner's name on his release papers, they recall that he was one of three criminals who pulled off the bloody Danvers bank robbery years ago. Jessica and Sheriff Amos Tupper go to a Portland Sheriff's convention by bus. After picking up two unknown passengers, the stormy weather and damage force the party to take an indefinite rest at a diner. When she goes back to the bus to look for a book, she finds Gilbert Stoner, one of the extra passengers, a just released ex-convict dead, stabbed with a screw-driver. While everybody is stuck at least till the local police arrives, Amos with help from Jessica conduct an informal investigation.
