Former FBI profiler Frank Black returns to his hometown of Seattle with his wife Catherine, a clinical social worker, and their little daughter, Jordan. Frank, his old friend Lt. Bob 'Bletch' Bletcher, Det. Bob Giebelhouse from the Seattle Police Department, and Peter Watts from the mysterious Millennium Group that Frank works for as a consultant investigate a series of psychosexual homicides being committed by a deranged and confused serial killer driven by Nostradamus and biblical prophecies, who believes he's punishing his victims, mostly strippers and male prostitutes, for their sin of lust. Several young men arrive at a remote warehouse in San Francisco in expensive cars. One of them, having been given a dose of LSD, is left behind by his friends to face an unknown horror waiting in the darkness. A few days later, Frank is called to San Francisco when piles of ashes, possibly the cremated remains of humans, are found in a public garden. They also find links to the missing son of Chechnyan immigrants, whose last contact with his parents was a letter talking about the coming fires of Gehenna. While investigating, Frank takes the time to confide in another member of the Millenium Group, Mike Atkins, about the mysterious pictures of his wife and daughter that have started arriving at his house again. The Millennium Group is screening a new candidate, Jim Horn, whom Frank teams up with to investigate the brutal murder of a meter maid. Jim shows promise, but he is also under much of the same stresses that Frank suffered from when he had his nervous breakdown, on top of which Jim's wife has left him and taken their son. Meanwhile, the killer strikes again, slaughtering a postal worker and a nurse, all the while leaving minute messages taunting the authorities. As he tries to prevent another victim from being killed, Frank must also try to keep Jim's growing inability to hold himself together from unraveling the investigation. Frank helps out Bob on a strange case: a woman receives a package containing a human tongue, with no possible explanation of who sent it or why. Bob reveals that this is just one of a series of similar incidents, usually involving hands or fingers. A little later a body is found missing its tongue, and Frank soon matches it with another corpse belonging to the murderer. While Bob is willing to call this a closed case, Frank believes that the truth goes deeper and there are more people involved. A man sitting in an English pub in Washington, D.C. gets up from his table and calls emergency services on the bar's pay phone. When the operator picks up, he merely presses six keys on the phone, spelling out the word KABOOM. Soon after he leaves the pub, a bomb blast tears the building apart while he watches from across the street. Delving into the man's psychosis, Frank learns that, unlike ordinary terrorists or thrill killers, this man is after something he can only find within the explosions he creates. Frank gets a call from Bob asking for help on a terrible case. A young couple has been brutally murdered inside their own home, while their young daughter was forced to watch. Oddly, the couple had a high-tech security system in place, but the alarm never went off until after the crime was finished. Now that the child is in the hospital, Bob wants to interview her as soon as possible. Catherine, who is providing counseling, insists that while the girl may be able to ID the killer, forcing her to re-live the event may push her irrevocably beyond treatment. When the boyfriend shoots and kills a policeman during a traffic stop, the check run on the car's license plate leads to a link with a string of serial killings from several years earlier, which is where Peter and Frank get called in. As the couple continues their search for Angel leaving a trail of bodies in their wake, Frank must unlock the family's secrets to guess what their goal is and where they are headed. After receiving a motorbike for his birthday and going out joyriding, a troubled youth is attacked by a man wielding a cattle prod. His parents are sick with worry, which only becomes worse they come home to find their boy's motorbike parked out front, and a body in his bed. The body however, is not their son, but another boy who was kidnapped earlier. Living in a gated community because they wanted to create the perfect safe haven for themselves, the people of the town are demanding that the police find whoever has been coming in and doing this. A young couple at an underground rave encounters a man offering drugs and some interesting experiences. When the couple's nude bodies are then found posed as Adam and Eve in the local arboretum, the Millennium Group is called in. Working with fellow group member Maureen and a skeptical local detective, Frank pieces together the reasons behind the killer's behavior based on what he does to his victims. A woman is brutally murdered in her own home, and soon after a convenience store clerk is gunned down with no provocation. In both cases, the killer leaves halves of the same playing card, proving the two seemingly unrelated cases are the work of one man. Upon seeing the cards, Frank immediately knows who the culprit is: a brutal serial killer he pursued back when he was an FBI agent, who took the lives of three of Frank's partners and almost killed Frank as well. The only problem is that the man Frank faced is still in prison, serving multiple life sentences. Somehow, he has inspired someone to carry on his work, and Frank must find him. Frank's brother Tom comes to Seattle for his baby's baptism, for which Frank is the godfather. Immediately after the ceremony, however, Tom's wife is kidnapped right outside the church. With the case coming so close to home, Lt. Bletcher warns Frank to stay away, as any evidence he uncovers will be considered biased and tainted. Frank, however, is unable to just sit by and do nothing when the victim is a member of his own family. Perhaps more disturbing to Frank and Catherine is the fact that Jordan knew her aunt was in trouble when nobody else could see her, indicating that she may have inherited Frank's terrible talent. Frank leaves on a business trip to Utah, where he has been asked to create a profile of William Garry, a man who has murdered his wife and three children. Garry has already been convicted, and now the prosecutor needs Frank's profile to show he deserves the death penalty. Garry, who has put up no defense and says himself that he deserves death, describes the killings in perfect detail, claiming he acted out on a rage that had been building up inside him for years. As Frank investigates the crime scene, however, an image appears of a killing done with absolute calm. Some piece of the puzzle is missing, but few involved in the investigation want to look for it. Frank is found in an alley in Yakima covered in cuts and bruises and unable to remember where he is or how he got there. All he has are vague memories of a medical study, an email exchange with a doctor that he conducted under a false name, and the belief that someone has been killed. With Peter's help, Frank retraces his steps, first contacting the shut-in former doctor who introduced him to the man conducting the trials. From there, however, the trail seems to run cold: nobody at the clinic knows anything about a medical trial, and none of fellow guinea pigs that Frank contacts can come up with a consistent story about anyone being killed. Ephraim Fabricant, a doctor jailed for a string of murders that Frank Black helped solve, is wheeled into an operating room to donate a kidney to his ailing sister. As he recovers in post-op, someone posing as a nurse savagely beats the officer on guard and takes Fabricant away. As Frank and Peter try to locate him, their investigations lead them to Lucy Butler, a woman who had kept up a long correspondence with Fabricant and who now claims to be his wife. Several days later, a much weaker Fabricant is dumped at a nearby hospital, missing his second kidney. In the parking lot of a supermarket, a young man shoots a well-dressed businessman after making a strange speech. As Frank watches the event, however, it appears that the young man killed his target with a bolt of lightning rather than a bullet. The scene then flashes back several days earlier, with Frank being called in to help with a series of very elaborately staged satanic murder rituals. A rather dull-witted man with no history of violent crime is arrested for the crimes and then confesses at his bail hearing to killing Bob Bletcher as well. As this is going on, the defendant's lawyer, Al Pepper, keeps hounding Frank to leave the Millennium group and work for him. Frank, however, senses something very wrong with the slick lawyer. Frank arrives in North Dakota to investigate a series of horse murders. Normally the Millennium Group would not get involved in this, but the killings have a ritualized element to them and Frank fears that the killer may soon escalate his activities. He encounters resistance from farmers who react with disgust to his analysis of the killer's sexual motivations, and from local veterinarian Dr. Vaughn who is disgusted with the hypocrisy of farmers who mistreat and slaughter their horses asking for help when someone else kills them. The episode opens at Chernobyl nuclear power plant just before the disastrous meltdown. As the plant crew are evacuating, one of the guards claims the meltdown was caused by someone named Yaponchik, who is seen climbing over a fence and escaping just before the explosion. Several years later, the same man approaches a stranger outside a Russian Orthodox church in New York and shoots him in the face. Frank and Peter are then called in to help the NYPD, who are also receiving help from an officer of the Moscow police. The Russian officer dismisses the claims about Yaponchik, saying he's just a fairytale, but Frank notices things that tell him otherwise. The Blacks travel to Virginia to visit Catherine's family. After dinner, Catherine's father asks Frank to talk with a friend of his: the friend has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and his son is behind bars for murdering his wife. The prison will allow the son to visit his father, but the father has disowned him. At the urging of the mother Frank takes a look at the details of the case, and sees the young man does not fit the killing's profile, leading him to believe that the murder was committed by someone else. At the same time, another man has just murdered a suburban housewife and is taking her body up to an Appalachian campground, talking to it all the while. Could he have been involved in the earlier murder? Also, a shadowy figure continually appears, attempting to steer the murderer toward Catherine Black. What are his plans?
