FBI Agent Audrey Parker is sent to Haven, Maine to track down Jonas Lester an escapee from a Federal prison facility. Haven was Lester's home town but Parker arrives to find that he is dead, apparently from falling off a nearby cliff. local Police Chief Wuormos is quite happy to put it down to an accident, but Parker doubts it given the location of the body. Working with local Det. Nathan Wuormos, the Chief's son, she begins to interview several of the locals who may have had reason to want Lester dead including Conrad Brauer and local crook Duke Crocker. There are many strange characters in town and Parker is taken aback by sudden changes in the weather and other unexplained phenomena. Audrey visits Haven's farmer's market only to see the food at three stalls wither and rot before her eyes. She and Det. Nathan Wournos visit each of the farms where the food originated and much the same has happened there. Their initial theory is that someone may have a grudge and be seeking revenge against the farmers themselves. The plague seems to be spreading however and focus of their investigation is a restaurant owned by two brother, the Second Chance. Audrey and Nathan have yet another bizarre case on their hands when a prominent member of the exclusive Haven Hunt Club is found in his car, mauled to to death. It has all of the earmarks of a wolf attack and Chief of Police Wournos, who is also a member of the club, is all set to organize a hunting expedition to track and kill the animal. He reluctantly agrees to Audrey's request for 24 hours to investigate further and there are soon two other attacks, one by a bear and the other by a moose. The moose attack is most revealing since it turns out the animal was stuffed leading them to believe that supernatural causes are actually at work.
