Sixteen year old Sam lives with his mother Jenny, a hospital nurse, his father having died in Afghanistan. At school he befriends the bullied Oscar and new girl Chrissy, whose widowed policeman father Bill has moved them to be nearer to his elderly mother Margaret, a patient on Jenny's ward. Outwardly amiable and popular with Jenny's patients he wins Bill's thanks for offering to take the blame when Chrissy deliberately starts a fire in the school. Following the mysterious death of elderly patient Mr Williams and the theft of his watch nurse Cathy is suspicious of Sam, who spent a lot of time reading to him but Sam feigns grief, allowing Cathy to be suspended for negligence. Jenny is also concerned, especially when she finds the watch in Sam's possession and bars him from the hospital. Her worries increase when Oscar's parents stop the boys from seeing each other after Sam attacks their son for no good reason. She confides her fears to Bill, on a date, where she also tells him that her husband is not a dead war hero as she has led Sam to believe but a convicted murder, soon eligible for parole. Having killed Cathy and passed it off as suicide Sam discovers the truth about his father and, on Christmas Day, confronts Jenny, storming out after refusing to accept her reasons for lying. He joins Chrissy, who has just witnessed her grandmother Margaret abuse her dead mother's name, and they escape to the seaside, where Sam gives her a crucifix stolen from Cathy. Jenny eventually gives in to Sam's demands to see his father, Peter, in prison.
